Seine Kompositionen sind keine Technik-Demonstrationen, sondern sehr musikalisch, melodisch und rhythmisch wunderbar fließend arrangiert. Neben der 6-String-Acoustic Guitar spielt Don Alder auch eine Harp-Guitar, eine Gitarre bei der oberhalb der normalen 6 Saiten und des Standard-Griffbrettes weitere 6 frei schwingende Bass-Saiten über einen Zusatzresonanzkörper verlaufen. Erfolgsgitarrist Andy McKee verhalf der Harp-Guitar ebenfalls zu Popularität.
